Music Video - Questions & Answers

1) What would you consider to be the main purpose of a music video?

I think the main purpose of a music video varies from artist to artist. Usually, and probably the most foremost is to use a Music Video to get attention, and or extra viewers - which of-course creates profit for the artist and the label. Other main reasons include, for example, artists using music video's to philosophical/controversial messages - and or to create a unique feeling.

2) What other purposes for a Music Video might there be?

Apart from the main reasons I stated above, I can only think of one more important one that comes into account - and thats the fact that every top viewed "Music" song on youtube has a music video. Sometimes music video's are not relevant or crucial, but just there to show off to artist, and that everyone else makes music videos.

3) How might an artist extend their income though having a Music Video?

As stated above, I think a perfect example here is if I ask, how many views do you think Gangnam Style would have if there wasn't a music video? The same applies here for Miley Cyrus and the controversy in her personal appearance/way of showing herself, I think this has caused a lot more views, and a lot more sales than if otherwise was just a song, not a video.

4) Describe how and why music video's have been used to fill in for bands on tour or when otherwise not available?

When top of the pops aired, bands were not always available for live shows. Instead, Top of the Pops would fill in their roll for a music video. This is crucial to keep viewers interested in your band, when people watch T.V, they watch it, don't just listen. If it was just music in this case, the attention of the viewers would wander, and probably not be completely fixated. You could say a MV satisfies the thirst for complete entertainment.

5) Thinking back through history and presently... how have music videos enabled an 'extension of outlets' (opened up ways to get music out the the masses)?

People who buy a music video may not necessarily listen to music; a video can attract fans of the song or fans of the video maker, they could even design different editions to attract specific parts of the audience. A music video can connect with a wider audience than a audio tracck
A music video gives the company and artist numerous ways to expand its potential audience. A music video more than doubles the way a song can be accessed. A music video can be seen in many different ways- on a special DVD or blu-ray, often bundled with the soundtrack (e.g. christmas promtions at HMV), on a Television channel, or on the internet. This ties in with publicity and other areas.
A music video once made public can easily spread to other people, for example someone can ‘like’ a video on facebook and provide a link to it on youtube, or can spread word of it through conversations, this isn’t directly an outlet but it helps to expand the audience, music labels could make a video free to download for a small period-this ties in with publicty, then people would reush to watch it and word would spread.
A music video can also lead its crew and singer to more work. For example Spike Jonze originally a noted music video director has since established himself as a proficient feature film director.

Styles of Music Video

What is a Narrative Music Video?

A narrative music video, in simple terms is a music video which tells a story. There are many examples of MV's having these. Bon Jovi - Always is a good example.

Why was a Narrative Video chosen for this song?

Usually, adding narrative causes the viewer to have more connection, an emotionally response and/or helps them understand what the song was written for. In this case, the song is about a very important women in his life, this is shown through the narrative video as structured moments from his life with the girls, and the end of that.

How effective do you think the Video is at promoting the artist and song? Why?

I think the video is rather effective at grasping the viewers attention, it begins with showing how beautiful and sexy the girl is, showing the physical attachment. It is then developed with emotional scenes, happy scenes and bonding scenes. I think adding a narrative music video to this song really helps get the idea of what's going on behind the song, without it, it's really open to interpretation (less so than some other songs) which might have changed the view on the song. I think it promotes the artist well, it's very styled similar to the rest of his work, which is quite unique.
